Our little Zoe turned one year old today. Happy Birthday little girl!!!!

Zoe and Oreo

It seems like it was just yesterday when we picked up the little black and white ball of fur.

She has turned into a very friendly, very fast, bold springer spaniel. I was hoping she will be chasing live birds for her birthday, but we are not there yet with her training.  She retrieves bumpers, frozen, and freshly killed birds to hand. Soon we will start on the quartering segment and introduce some fliers. I have been more relaxed with her training then with Oreo’s. He was only 10 months old when we shot his first bird for him.

Oreo at 10 months

Stay tuned for more updates, we will try to advance her training to the next level in the upcoming weeks.

Weekend Warriors

Young Roosters

Having a job really cuts into my dog training time. We are back into the weekend warrior training mode. Unfortunately there are other weekend obligations and some time the dogs get the short end of the stick. Such was the case last weekend, and Oreo missed on bird training. To make it up to him, we headed 80 miles north to the training grounds, and in addition planted pheasants instead of stinky pigeons.

My wifey got me a great birthday gift this year, concert tickets to see Rodrigo y Gabriela at the Red Rocks Amphitheater. We saw them for the first time back in 2008 at the Fillmore Auditorium in Denver on a Valentine’s day. George, Shannon, Aida, and I have been looking forward to this since beginning of April.

After a quick dinner at the Mod Market, and a very much needed caffeine fix, we headed  south on 93 to town of Morrison.

Ready to party

We have been to Red Rock before, but never for a concert. George warned us that we might get spoiled and not want to go to any concerts anywhere other than Red Rocks. I think he was right. This place is just amazing.

We are almost there

Amel and I decided to spend Saturday morning at a Winchester shooting range.  After a hefty breakfast, two of us headed across the Mississippi river to the state of Illinois.  Since I didn’t bring my gun to St Louis, I rented one at the shooting facility.

At first I was thinking to rent a gun that I have not shot before, but after trying a Winchester model 101, decided against that idea and went back to the old reliable, Browning Citori Lightning.

We started off with a round of trap.

Shooting Trap-right elbow should be higher

The score was very close up until I moved to the station #5. I had three birds fly hard to the right, and I managed to miss all three due to an insufficient lead. At the end of the game the score was 19/17 in my brothers favor. I think its due to a gun, hey I am trying to come up with an excuse here guys. We were lucky that an experienced gentleman willing to share a thing or two was in charge off keeping the score and releasing the birds for us.  Afterward he gave us a few pointers and pointed some mistakes we were making.

After a quick gun change, we were on our way to 5-stand. My new gun was a Browning XS Skeet gun.

Skeet Gun

We have never shot any skeet before, and 5-stand was a loads of fun. It takes a while to get used to, and know where to look for the second bird, but once you figure the flight path the fun begins. We managed to shoot some doubles and a few wobbly white rabbits.

Next was the handgun range. Amel has been shooting his pistol for some time now and is getting good at it. Me on the other hand, I prefer shooting shotguns and more interactive shooting games, but had to try his new pistol out.

We started off shooting 7 yards targets and moved onto 25 yards.

After shooting 50 rounds, it was time to head home. What would be a St Louis trip without a stop at the Ted Drewes for some ice cream.

Route 66

Till the next time.

Maiden Voyage

Aida and I have been thinking about getting into mountain biking for some time now, and about a month ago decided to purchase our hard tail mountain bikes. After some online reviews and store tests we decided to go with TREK bikes. Aida got the Trek 4300 disc, and I went with the Trek 4500 gray version. Ever since we got the bike we have been riding around town on paved trail to get used to them (mostly the hard bike seat).

It just so happened that both of us have a day off today, and we decided to go and explore the Betasso Preserve.

The Canyon trail at Betasso is considered a beginner trail, but there are a few challenging spots that will test your ability and advance your skills at the same time.

Being our first time on this trail, or any other trail in fact, we took our sweet time. We were back at the parking lot in an hour. Managed to pass some riders get passed by a few as well. Bikes are dirty, our leg muscles are burning.

Overall it was a great day in the mountains and we hope this will become a weekly occurrence.

Stay tuned for more.

The End
